Golf Scramble
Over 170 golfers took part in the St. Mary’s Center 11th Annual Golf Outing held on September 25, 2008 at the Quail Chase Golf Club. Along with great greens and superior golf, a meal of BBQ pork and giant hot dogs was prepared by David Harrod of Harrod Concrete and Stone of Lexington, along with Bill Bond of Dairy Queen who supplied the dinner rolls, side dishes and Dairy Queen Ice Cream Bars. Golfers, volunteers and guests bid on Silent and Live Auction items which were donated by local businesses like Breadworks LLC,
However, one of the most exciting parts of the outing was the “Rock Drop”. The rock drop, sponsored by the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association and St. Mary’s Center sells “rocks”, actually numbered golf balls, for $100 each. A limit of 500 balls are sold and randomly placed into a bucket and dropped from a helicopter at 100 feet. The rocks were dropped onto the driving range of Quail Chase Golf Club above a make-shift golf hole. If a numbered “rock” drops into the hole, the winner receives $20,000 and if it lands closest to the hole the winner wins $10,000. This year, no rock made it into the hole but a single ball, number 175, was closest to the hole and the winner took home a cool $10,000 in cash.
This years event raised over $39,000 and over the last 11 years has raised over $439,000. On behalf of the “special people” we serve, thank you! Special Thanks goes out to Frank Otte of Frank Otte Nursery for being the major sponsor of this event. Frank’s generosity over many years is greatly appreciated by all the students who have benefited from his support. We also are appreciative of Brian Forest of Hoagland Commercial Real Estate who was the Chair of the Golf Committee and the entire golf committee, Joe Jr and Joe Sr of Preston Street Poultry, Louisville Metro Councilman Hal Heiner for being a rock drop judge, Jeff Baker for the use of his helicopter, Paul’s Fruit Market, Pam Duffy of Middletown Branch of Commonwealth Bank, and VFW Post 1170 for all the volunteer help.
